When I was an undergraduate, I sometimes didn't dare to ask questions during courses, especially during the early stages of my studies. The idea to raise my arm and ask something like "Sorry, but could you please explain what 'a priori' means?" scared me A LOT. I was pretty sure that everyone else knew and I didn't want to appear illiterate. I thus remained silent and listened to stuff that I didn't really understand. What a waste of time.
